Abstract:
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is an agriculturally and economically important vegetable crop worldwide, consumed by its immature fruits.
The cucumber mesocarp is important for fruit acceptance, which is determined by fruit thickness, and edible ratios of cucumber.
In present study, the thick mesocarp line 'D8' was selected to analyze the gene expression profiling of mesocarp at 0, 3, 6, 9 days after pollination (DAP) by RNA-sequencing.
Analysis of the differentially expressed genes revealed that the genes mainly related to ribosome, carbon metabolism, biosynthesis of amino acids and oxidative phosphorylation were upregulated during the first 3 DAP. From the 3 DAP to 6 DAP, the genes related to oxidative phosphorylation, photosynthesis and phagosome were highly induced.
From 6 DAP to 9 DAP, the genes related to plant hormone signal transduction, ubiquitin mediated proteolysis, endocytosis were highly induced.
The differentially expressed genes linked to cyclin, hormone biosynthesis/ signaling, carbon metabolism, transcription factors MYB and WRKY were upregulated during the 9 DAP. The results of this study should lead to a better understanding of the mechanism of mesocarp formation in cucumber.
