Abstract:
Hami-melon (Cucumis melo ssp. melo) has been cultivated for a long history in Xinjiang, a northwest province in China, and there are abundant landraces of melon in Xinjiang.
After investigation, collection and arrangement, 101 landraces were classified into 3 varieties and 5 cultivar groups, including extremely early mature Guadan variety (var. chandalak (pang) Greb), summer melon variety (var. ameri (pang) Greb) and winter melon variety (var. zard (pang) Greb). In order to cultivate early mature, thick rind melon hybrids resistance to disease and tolerance to weak light, progress in breeding have been made as follows by using landraces in Xinjiang.
