Abstract:
The objective of our research is to establish a technique for the year-round production of strawberries to enable high yields and large-scale management.
We developed a movable bench system, which enables the operator to work at a fixed position, since the strawberry plants pass by serially, and which facilitates short transplanting cycle.
We developed a prototype comprising two longitudinal conveyors, two lateral conveyors, 17 planting benches which circulate continuously, a chemical spraying unit and a control unit.
The prototype is 5.04 m wide and 5.25 m long.
Since its design reduces the space needed for access, the plant density is 12.5 plants/m2 within cultivated area, almost two times that of traditional greenhouse cultivation.
Several tests of the basic functions showed satisfactory performance.
