Abstract:
The effect of gibberellic acid (GA3) (0, 50, 200 mg L-1) on vegetative growth and flowering were investigated in three strawberry cvs Camarosa, Laguna and Seascape grown under different photoperiod regimes (long and short days, using 16 and 10h light, respectively). Plants were potted on November 18, kept outdoors for one month and then placed under controlled climatic conditions of 18/12o C day/night temperature when the GA3 and photoperiod treatments were applied. Results showed that GA3 increased the petiole length and leaf area. GA3 application at 200 mg L-1 increased the petiole length to a greater extent than at 50 mg L-1. The different GA3 application doses increased the leaf area to a similar extent. GA3 reduced the time needed for inflorescence emergence and the effect was greater in cv. Seascape than the other cultivars. Flowering was also accelerated by GA3 treatment. GA3 at 200 mg L-1 caused marked inflorescence abnormalities especially in cv. Seascape, irrespective of photoperiod.
