Abstract:
Fruit firmness and large fruit size are two of the most important quality traits that industry demands of new sweet cherry cultivars. This paper outlines procedures and equipment used to evaluate firmness and the relationship between fruit firmness and other quality traits.
Results indicate that surface pitting (a post-harvest disorder) is not as severe on firm fruit as on softer fruit. Also, the relationship between fruit firmness and cracking susceptibility of the cherry is not consistent.
