Abstract:
Stands of rare forest tree species and indigenous shrubs in Germany are subject to fragmentation up to extinction at an alarming rate.
About ten years ago an inventory programme was started to register individuals, groups and stands (< 20 individuals) of forest tree and shrub species in Northwest Germany.
For evaluation they are characterized by morphological methods, by comparing isozymes, currently applied to Malus, Pyrus, Rhamnus and Viburnum, and on DNA-level in cooperation with German and European partners.
In situ and ex situ conservation help to reestablish selected trees and shrubs in the forest and countryside, creating adaptable, high performing forests rich in species to fulfill their manifold functions: utilization, protection, conservation recreation.
