Abstract:
To characterize the gibberellin 20-oxidase gene in apple, we isolated the genomic and cDNA clone from 'Fuji' apple.
Southern blot analysis revealed that at least two homologous genes exist in apple.
Sequence analysis revealed that the GA 20-oxidase gene consists of three exons and two introns.
The deduced amino acid sequence of this cDNA showed 70%, 61%, and 49% identity to those of GA 20-oxidase cloned from French bean, Arabidopsis, and pumpkin, respectively.
The expression of this gene was mainly detected in immature seeds.
This gene expression in immature seeds was activated when apple fruits were rapidly growing.
These results suggested that the apple GA 20-oxidase gene obtained here may be involved in fruit growth in apple.
