Abstract:
Hybrid seedlings of Priscilla, Liberty and SR 0523 apple proved to be less tolerant of autumn planting than other apple progenies.
Among apple clonal rootstocks, 62–396 was hardier than V-25-3. Seedlings of Pyrus salicifolia (95% winter-killed) and Pyrus communis (47% winter-killed) were severely damaged in the 1993–94 winter.
An examination of the root system architecture revealed that pear seedlings with a branching root system were more likely to survive winter damage than those with a tap root system.
The quince clonal rootstock BA-29 was severely damaged by the cold winter of 1995–96 even though it was not transplanted in the autumn.
