Abstract:
Potato water requirement was determined in the field trial which included sprinkling irrigation at various pre-irrigation soil moisture and a non-irrigated control plot.
In the Chernozem zone of Yugoslavia potato water requirement is 460–480 mm.
This amount of water produced the highest potato yields.
The effect of irrigation on potato yield was highly significant.
Irrigation increased the yield of potato 44.6–71.6%. The lower limit of the optimal soil moisture on Chernozem for potato is 75–80% of field water capacity (FWC), where the yields were high and stable 26.161–30.714 t ha-1. Under conditions with no irrigation, potato yield was not stable and varied from 7.750 to 25.952 t ha-1, which depended on rainfall amount and distribution according to years.
