Abstract:
The Swedish certification system has its background in a Nordic cooperation for certification finished in 1991, and in the EPPO-schemes.
Until the introduction in 1980 of the Foundation of the Swedish Horticultural Elite-plant-station, we had no official propagation scheme.
The propagation relied upon visual inspections of the plant material.
The certification system started for strawberry plants but today also cultivars of Malus, Prunus, Pyrus, Ribes and Rubus are available as certified plants.
When problems occurred in the Swedish strawberry production with Phytophthora fragariae var. fragariae (red stele) at the end of the 1970's, all imported plants had to be put into quarantine.
Not only fungus diseases were common, but also bud nematode (Aphelenchoides spp.) infections, necessitating new legislation.
Soil herbicides, as metylbromide, have never been used in the Swedish plant propagation or strawberry production.
