Abstract:
As part of an international cultivar trial 12 cultivars of asparagus from Germany, The Netherlands, France, Spain, USA and Taiwan were planted in 1988. In autumn 1989 plant losses of 10 to 15 % were already observed in the cultivars ‘Tainan’, ‘Del Monte 361’ and ‘UC 157’. Depending on the cultivar, total yields ranged between 0.47 and 4.2 t ha-1. Yields of 0.82 t ha-1 for ‘Del Monte 361’ and 0.47 t ha-1 for ‘UC 157’ were very poor under German climatic conditions.
In 1991 the losses of plants increased up to 66 % for ‘UC 157’ and of 37 % for ‘Del Monte 361’. A maximum loss of 5 % for the German cultivars and no loss of plants of Dutch varieties were observed.
In 1992 total yield attained lay between 0.18 and 6.16 t ha-1, only Dutch and German cultivars showed yields in the higher range.
Single plant yields of surviving plants from southern and non-European cultivars were also very low.
Under Rhine-valley conditions the top single plant yield of 462 g was attained by the cultivar ‘Gijnlim’, contrasted by ‘UC 157’ with 45 g per plant, which was lowest in the trial.
Due to high plant losses, it did not appear relevant to continue the trial beyond 1992. Obviously the performance of a given cultivar can be best realised in areas offering similar conditions than those of the breeders.
Therefore German growers are recommended to use Dutch and German cultivars of those tested.
