Abstract:
Methyl jasmonate (JA-Me) promoted the leaf abscission in intact Kalanchoe blossfeldiana plants treated before flower bud initiation and during flowering.
Spraying of plants with JA-Me at conc. of 1000 and 500 mg/l caused the leaf abscission in 100%, and a conc. of 125 mg/l promoted leaf abscission in about 20%, during 2–3 days after treatment.
JA-Me at a conc. of 800 mg/l greatly increased CO2 evolution (about 10 times) and stimulated ethylene production.
Treatments of plants with exogenous ethylene at a high concentration (1000 mg/l) did not induce leaf abscission and did not stimulate CO2 production.
Pretreatments of plants with IAA, GA, BA, and ABA one day before treatment with methyl jasmonate did not prevent leaf abscission.
The mechanism of leaf abscission induced by methyl jasmonate in Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is unknown but it is not related to ethylene production.
