Abstract:
The monophenol p-Hydroxyacetophenone (pHAP) and its endogenous precursor Picein were detected in spruce needles using HPLC-techniques.
The glycoside Picein was converted into pHAP in spruce needles during necrosis.
Spore germination of Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii but not its mycel growth was inhibited to 50% with 1 mM pHAP. The growth of the fungi Sirococcus strobilinus and Pecicula livida was severely inhibited with 1mM pHAP, whereas the growth of Lophodermium piceae was only slightly effected by the monophenol.
All four pathogens degraded Picein into pHAP. Only Lophodermium piceae and Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii converted pHAP into still unknown metabolites, possibly explaining their lower susceptibility towards pHAP.
