Abstract:
This paper describes the research in Africa on cassava mosaic disease, since initial transmission studies and resistance breeding in Tanzania in the 1930s.
There have since been important contributions from IITA, Ibadan, on resistance breeding; the UK research team in Kenya in the 1970s on etiology and control; the ORSTOM epidemiology project in Côte d'Ivoire in the 1980s, and various national programs.
Possible approaches to control are discussed and emphasis is placed on the need for increased efforts to combat this mosaic disease and for an improved coordination of research activities.
