HORTICULTURAL EDUCATION IN THE URBAN LANDSCAPE ENVIRONMENT IN INDIA

Abstract:
Urban Landscape Environment is important from recreational, aesthetic, functional and circulation points of view. Horticultural Education plays an important role in the teaching, research, planning, development and maintenance of proper Urban Landscape Environment to make it harmonious, healthy and peaceful. Though India is the richest country in horticultural plant wealth, it is the poorest in its exploitation for the Urban Landscape Environment due to lack of awareness and technical know-how about the environment. There are very few institutes/institutions throughout the large country which offer post graduate degrees in Landscape Horticulture/Planning/Forestry. Almost all state agricultural universities are offering under graduation/post graduation in Horticulture but are putting the emphasis on fruits and vegetables. After teaching research and planning, the development and maintenance field is again limited. Except for Chandigarh, New Delhi and Central Public Works Department, no other city/Department has a well organised Urban Landscape Horticultural/Environment wing. Television, radio and press give very limited information on Horticultural Education. Seminar/Workshops/Conferences provide good results but are not sufficiently organised. In practice a limited number of social organisations are involved in Horticultural Education. Poor town planning and provision of open spaces curtail the development of Horticultural Education. Lack of funds for teaching, research, planning, development and maintenance, lack of co-ordination, existing law and order are the other major hurdles in the field. From the overall picture it can be felt that though there is little formal/regular Horticultural Education for the Urban Landscape Environment, there is a lot of change in the subject during the last decade.
