Abstract:
Medicinal crops cultivation area has been increasing rapidly since the public announcement for the Traditional Korean Medical Insurance in 1987 in the Republic of Korea. Medicinal crops researches have been conducted at Crop Experiment Stations and nine Provincial Rural Development Administrations of RDA for dividing tasks of crops breeding and cultivation. Department of medicinal crops in crop Experiment station published the booklet of " Survey for Growth Characteristics of medicinal crops", which included naturally grown medicinal plants distributed in Korea, 148 families and 3,140 species.

Five hundreds and sixty three species of medicinal crops were collected through whole land area of which 242 species were evaluated for their characteristics of growth. Fifteen cultivars for nine crops including Angelica gigas Radix and job's tears etc. were bred and fifteen crops cultivation method trials are almost established and 13 crops are developed for medicinal crop farmers. In 1990, forty nine species of medicinal crops were cultivated to 9,179 ha and produced medicinal herbs, 22,822 M/T.

Tissue culture for medicinal crops has been studied particularly for Corni officinalis Fructus, Cnidii Rhizoma, Bupleuri Radix and Acanthopanax sessiliflorun etc. to obtain mass propagation and artificial seeds for high-priced medicinal crops that are hard to reproduced under the natural conditions in Korea.

In the future prospects, Medicinal crops Research Institute would be founded to accelerate deeper systematic researches for the medicinal crops. International cooperative researches also have been required to stimulate the cooperative medicinal crops researches between Korea and Japan, Taiwan, China, and European countries.
