Abstract:
An alternative strategy based on Agrobacterium rhizogenes rol genes has been developed in woody species in order to increase or induce rooting.
Chimeric plants (with transgenic root apparatus) have been produced and hardened in olive, apple, pistachio and almond by simple stem inoculation with Agrobacterium rhizogenes wild type.
Moreover whole transgenic plants, characterized by a higher rooting ability with respect to control, were obtained (and hardened) in kiwi via leaf disc transformation with Agrobacterium tumefaciens LBA 4404 containing the vector Bin 19 carrying rol A,B,C genes from Agrobacterium rhizogenes TDNA. In addition Prunus avium F12/1 transformed calli from roots induced by the above mentioned engineered strain were also established.
