Abstract:
Kiwifruit acreage and production in Europe has increased consistently during the last 10 years.
The leading producers are Italy, France, Greece, Portugal and Spain. ‘Hayward’ is the only pistillate cultivar grown in commercial orchards whereas the staminate cultivars ‘Matua’ and ‘Tomuri’ are used as pollinators in ‘Hayward’ plantings.
The crop's adaptability to different climatic situations, training systems, management techniques and pollination methods employed in each country and the main problems and diseases found in these initial years of cultivation are discussed.
