Abstract:
The possibility of obtaining fertile intergeneric hybrids between L. esculentum and S. lycopersicoides by the application of tissue culture techniques and induced somaclonal variation was studied. The wild species S. lycopersicoides can be used in tomato breeding as a donor of useful germplasm for cold tolerance and disease resistance. The cultivation of seeds from the cross F1 (L. esculentum v. cerasiformae x L. esculentum) x S. lycopersicoides on embryo culture medium gave rise to direct germination and formation of plantlets as well as to callus formation. After long-term subculture, 2 tetraploid fertile regenerants were obtained. The observed low percent of irregularities during the meiotic division showed that polyploidization could not eliminate the genetic sterility manifested in the diploid intergeneric hybrids. The different percent of fertility in the alloploid regenerants, in spite of their common genetic origin, is an example of the variation among hybrid somaclones. By self and sib mating of the fertile regenerants a considerable number of viable seeds was obtained.
