SEED DEVELOPMENT AS A PARAMETER FOR MATURITY, QUALITY, AND RELATIVE YIELD OF FRENCH BEANS (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS)

DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1989.244.5
Abstract:
To investigate the relation between maturity, quality and yield trials have been conducted with the small podded varieties Pros and Belami compared with the semi-large podded variety Fran. Observations were made concerning yield, size, seedlength, seed/pod ratio by weight and dry matter content of pods. The results indicated that seed/pod ratio by weight of the thickest pods can be used as parameter for relative yield and maturity. A seed/ pod ratio of 12 –20 % is optimal, taking also into consideration the yield and quality. In these trials a seed/ pod ratio by weight of respectively 5, 8, 12, 16, and 32 % correlated with a relative yield of 60, 82, 100, 108 and 120.
