ISHS Acta Horticulturae 169: International Workshop on Improvement of Sweet and Sour Cherry Varieties and Rootstocks

PRECOCITY AND PRODUCTIVITY IN SOME SWEET CHERRY CROSSES

Author:   J. Blazek
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1985.169.12
Abstract:
Altogether 27 crosses of the whole number of 1145 seedlings were evaluated from the point of view of the juvenile phase lenght and cropping efficiency. Some differences were found between the time of the first flower set and the first fruit set. Only seldom seedlings brought flowers as soon as in the 2nd year after planting (in the 3rd season after germination), 9.6 % in the 3rd year and the majority of them in the 4th year-50.7 %. A certain part of the seedlings with a short juvenile phase segregated in the progenies of the varieties 'Van', 'Kordia', 'Early Rivers' and 'Moreau'. A mass beginning of early cropping was typical for the crosses of 'Van' x Büttners Späte Rote' and 'Early Rivers' x 'Karesova'. A late beginning of cropping was frequent in the progenies of 'Stella', 'Moser' and 'Merton Late'. With the majority of progenies was found a weak negative relationship (r= -0.3 - -0.5) between the hight of seedlings in time of planting and the lenght of the juvenile phase. This correlation was not proved in some crosses. In such cases the relationship was probably hidden by the segregation of seedlings with weak growth and a shorter juvenile phase or with more vigorous growth and a longer juvenile phase. The progenies with a mass beginning of early cropping were usually the most productive. The specific combination ability showes to be important for this character ('Van' x 'Büttners Späte Rote', 'Kordia' x 'Van'). A poor cropping of the seedling majority in some crosses of the varieties 'Vlachova', 'Moser', 'Kordia' and 'Van' was connected with their flower sensitivity to late spring frosts.
