Abstract:
Classical methods of virus identification based on biological properties are unsatisfactory, especially for viruses such as cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) whose biological properties are very variable.
More satisfactory methods are based on the intrinsic properties of the virus particles; especially particle morphology for determining the taxonomic group to which a virus belongs, and serology which can usually achieve more specific identification.
Methods of plant tissue extraction and rapid examination of the extracts by electron microscopy and immunodiffusion tests suitable for the identification of CMV are described.
