In opdracht van Martens BV voerde ADC ArcheoProjecten een Inventariserend Veldonderzoek (IVO) in de vorm van proefsleuven uit binnen het plangebied Venlo - Blerick, Ons Huis (afb. 1). Aanleiding voor het onderzoek vormde de geplande nieuwbouw in het plangebied. Hier zal de woning ‘Ons Huis’, gelegen in de Smeliënstraat 33 te Blerick, aan de straatkant worden gerenoveerd. Aan de achterzijde wordt de woning deels gesloopt voor de aanleg van een parkeerplaats, dat tot maximaal 30 cm -Mv wordt ontgraven. De geplande woningbouw ten westen van de pastorie (Smeliënstraat 31) en aan het kerkplein wordt deels gefundeerd tot een diepte van 85 cm -Mv. Hierbij vinden bodemverstorende activiteiten plaats waardoor een archeologisch onderzoek noodzakelijk is.Vooronderzoek Om de archeologische verwachting van het terrein te bepalen is in december 2007 een archeologisch vooronderzoek uitgevoerd in de vorm van een bureau- en booronderzoek. Op grond van dit onderzoek is aan het plangebied een hoge verwachting toegekend voor het aantreffen van vindplaatsen vanaf het Neolithicum tot de Nieuwe tijd (tabel 1). Door de diepverstorende impact van de bouwwerkzaamheden ten westen van de pastorie en aan het kerkplein is in deze zone vervolgonderzoek aanbevolen in de vorm van proefsleuven.Proefsleuvenonderzoek Het plangebied heeft een oppervlakte van ca. 0,3 ha en is deels bebouwd, deels verhard en deels in gebruik als plantsoen. De plaats waar het proefsleuvenonderzoek is uitgevoerd, situeerde zich op het plantsoen, gelegen ten westen van de pastorie (Smeliënstraat 31) en langs het kerkplein (Leeuwerikstraat/-plein). In het gebied is één proefsleuf aangelegd met een totale oppervlakte van ca. 2 200 m .In totaal zijn 15 sporen gedocumenteerd. Het betreft verkleuringen in de vorm van natuurlijke en recente verstoringen, één kuil en één paalkuil. De kuil is aan de hand van het aangetroffen vondstmateriaal gedateerd in de Late Middeleeuwen B (tabel 1). De conserveringstoestand van de aangetroffen sporen is matig tot slecht. Bij de aanleg van het vlak is één scherf roodbakkend geglazuurd aardewerk verzamelde dat in de 16 - 17gedateerd wordt. Uit het esdek zijn kleine baksteenfragmenten gevonden die vermoedelijk afkomstig zijn van kloostermoppen en dateren in de Late Middeleeuwen B (1250-1500). Het vondstmateriaal is sterk verweerd en slecht geconserveerd.Advies Op basis van de onderzoeksresultaten adviseert ADC ArcheoProjecten om het plangebied vrij te geven voor verdere ontwikkeling. Aan de hand van de resultaten van het onderzoek, bestaat de kans dat in de onmiddellijke omgeving van het plangebied archeologische waarden aanwezig zijn. Gezien de recente bebouwing rondom het plangebied is de kans klein dat deze nog intact in de bodem aanwezig zijn. Echter, het is aan het bevoegd gezag, de gemeente Venlo, om hierover een besluit te nemen. De Monumentenwet van 1988 blijft van toepassing. Het is niet uit te sluiten dat buiten de vindplaats toch nog archeologische resten voorkomen. Daarom merken wij op dat het aanbeveling verdient om de uitvoerder van het grondwerk te wijzen op de plicht archeologische vondsten te melden bij de bevoegde overheid, zoals aangegeven in de Monumentenwet 1988 en de Wet op de Archeologische Monumentenzorg.
