Meneer had astmatische bronchitis, als gevolg waarvan hij vaak ziek was en vaak niet naar school ging. In de Hongerwinter leed hij en de rest van het gezin aan ondervoeding. Hij werd uitgezonden als 'een ventje dat niet veel waard was' en kwam op 8 september 1945 met de trein in Biel Zwitserland aan. Hij kwam terecht bij de familie Kocher in het plaatsje Biel, waar hij tot 6 december verbleef. De heer en mevrouw Kocher waren beiden arts en niet onbemiddeld. Ze hadden een auto en personeel in huis en werden voor de jonge geïnterviewde een tweede vader en moeder. Hij kreeg er een eigen kamer met douche en toilet. De materiële omstandigheden in Zwitserland stonden dan ook in schril contrast met zijn leefsituatie in Schiedam, waar hij met zijn ouders en drie zussen in één ruimte sliep. Dr. Kocher leert hem hoe hij met zijn astma moet omgaan. Op 10 december gaat hij met de trein naar huis. Terug in Schiedam begonnen de astma-aanvallen opnieuw, waarna de familie Kocher hem met de auto in Schiedam ophaalde. Na anderhalf jaar koos hij ervoor naar Schiedam terug te keren. Meneer heeft nog altijd contact met zijn Zwitserse 'zusje' Ursula. Hij is zowel zijn pleegouders als zijn eigen vader en moeder dankbaar voor hetgeen ze voor hem hebben gedaan.

Document GV_Schiedam_gastgezin2_01_analyse_interview bevat een analyse van het interview. In het Gemeentearchief Schiedam kan een gescand boekje, als aandenken van het bezoek van de geïnterviewde aan Zwitserland in 1945, worden ingezien.
