Door De Steekproef bv is een plangebied onderzocht aan de Van Schouwenburgstraat te Sneek. De aanleiding voor het onderzoek is een geplande bouw van 54 appartementen langs de Van Schouwenburgstraat met ten noorden daarvan parkeerplaatsen. Hiervoor benodigde graafactiviteiten kunnen tot aantasting van eventueel aanwezige archeologische waarden leiden. Het onderzoek was gericht op de vaststelling of dergelijke waarden in het plangebied aanwezig kunnen zijn. Het onderzoek bestaat uit een bureauonderzoek en een veldonderzoek door middel van boringen. Uit het plangebied zijn geen archeologische vondsten of terreinen bekend. Uit de historische kaarten blijkt dat het plangebied tot in de twintigste eeuw onbebouwd was en in gebruik is geweest als weiland. De dichtstbijzijnde bebouwing bestond op de topografische kaart uit 1909 uit twee woningen ten zuidwesten van het plangebied. In de zeventiger jaren van de twintigste eeuw is het plangebied bebouwd met blokken woonhuizen. Deze zijn aan het begin van de eenentwintigste eeuw gesloopt. De verstoringsdiepte binnen het plangebied varieert van 0,95 tot 1,65 meter onder het maaiveld. Dit is de diepte tot waarop na de sloop van de voormalige bebouwing zand is opgebracht. In het plangebied zijn zeven boringen over het terrein verdeeld. Uit de resultaten van het met een guts verrichte booronderzoek blijkt dat de bodem van boven naar beneden bestaat uit een dik pakket opgebracht zand, een enkele decimeters dik pakket zwak venige klei en een pakket veen dat doorloopt tot tenminste vier meter beneden het maaiveld. In de ondergrond van het plangebied blijkt binnen vier meter geen dekzand aanwezig te zijn. De middelhoge verwachting voor de aanwezigheid van bewoningsresten uit de steentijd kan derhalve worden bijgesteld tot een lage verwachting.
Selectie-advies door drs. R. Exaltus (senior KNA-archeoloog/prospector) Op basis van de onderzoeksresultaten blijkt dat het plangebied tot op een diepte van 0,95 tot 1,6 meter uit opgebracht bouwzand bestaat. Hieronder is zwak venige klei aanwezig met daarin in de uiterste zuidwesthoek van het terrein puin- en houtskooldeeltjes. Deze zijn waarschijnlijk afkomstig van de bebouwing die oorspronkelijk ten zuidwesten van het plangebied stond. Behalve deze puin- en houtskooldeeltjes zijn in geen van de boringen archeologische indicatoren aangetroffen. Tezamen met het ontbreken van dekzandkoppen in het plangebied en de grote diepte tot waarop de bodem uit opgebracht zand bestaat, betekent dit dat de resultaten van het onderzoek geen aanleiding geven tot het adviseren van archeologisch vervolgonderzoek. In alle gevallen geldt dat indien bij toekomstig graafwerk toch archeologische vondsten worden gedaan of archeologische grondsporen worden aangetroffen, hiervan direct melding dient te worden gemaakt bij de minister conform de Erfgoedwet 2015, artikel 5.10 & 5.11. Met betrekking tot de bevindingen van voorliggend onderzoek dient contact te worden opgenomen met de gemeente Sneek (Mevr. Y.M. Boonstra).
