In opdracht van de gemeente Roosendaal heeft RAAP Archeologisch Adviesbureau in de zomer van 2006 een archeologische noodonderzoek uitgevoerd in plangebied de Engebeek. Aanleiding voor het archeologische onderzoek was een houten constructie die tijdens graafwerkzaamheden in het beekdal van de Engebeek is aangetroffen. Het doel van het onderzoek was de constructie te documenteren. Het archeologisch onderzoek diende te worden uitgevoerd omdat de houten constructie als gevolg van de graafwerkzaamheden aan zuurstof werd blootgesteld en daardoor uiterst kwetsbaar werd voor vernietiging door oxidatieprocessen. In het verleden heeft de mens dankbaar gebruikt van takken en twijgen bij het vissen. Takken werden vooral gebruikt bij de zogenaamde schutting- of weervisserij. Vissers richten een wering van wilgen en elzenhout op. De schuttingen konden op verschillende manieren opgesteld worden: n een rechte lijn, in een halve cirkel of in de vorm van een trechter. Soms vormden ze een ware doolhof. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk moeten ook de staketsels die in het plangebied zijn aangetroffen in verband gebracht worden met een visweer. De werking van de visweer is uiterst eenvoudig. De vis zwemt bij hoog water over de staketsels heen. Bij laag water werd de stroomafwaartse richting afgesloten door een haag van takken. Om terugzwemmen te voorkomen, werden zijweren (zgn. stuiken) aangelegd. Deze stuiken sloten aan op de noord-zuid georiënteerde basislijn. Hierdoor ontstond min of meer een veervormig patroon van takkenrijen waarvan de punt in stroomafwaartse richting was geplaatst. Bij teruglopend water werd hierdoor de terugweg van de vissen versperd. De vis werd ten slotte opgesloten en daardoor relatief eenvoudig gevangen in de oksel die werd gevormd door de basislijn en de zijweer. Zowel het palynologisch als pollenonderzoek hebben aangetoond dat de visweer niet was geplaatst in een brak of zoutwater milieu. Dit neemt niet weg dat de Engebeek onderhevig was aan getijdenverschillen. Tijdens vloed kon de Engebeek niet afwateren op zee. Hierdoor werd het zoete water van de Engebeek opgestuwd. Omdat de beken en rivieren in Nederland benedenstrooms worden gekenmerkt door een relatief gering verval, konden de getijdenverschillen diep landinwaarts merkbaar zijn. Als gevolg van de opstuwing kon de breedte van de bedding aanzienlijk toenemen. Bij laagtij stroomde het zoete water richting zee, waardoor grote delen van de monding van de Engebeek weer droogvielen. Met andere woorden: een ideaal biotoop voor een visweer.
