In opdracht van Plegt-Vos Infra & Milieu heeft RAAP in maart-april 2020 een archeologisch vooronderzoek (bureau- en verkennend booronderzoek) uitgevoerd naar het plangebied HEEMAFterrein, Bornsestraat 5-7 te Hengelo (gemeente Hengelo).
Het plangebied ligt op de overgang van een dekzandrug (noordzijde) naar een beekdal (zuidzijde). Het beeksysteem bestaat uit een zich telkens verplaatsende beek met hoog debiet en hoge sedimentatielast als gevolg van ontginningen langs de oevers. Het systeem zou in de middeleeuwen zijn dichtgeslibt. In het dekzand is enige bodemvorming waargenomen.
Het plangebied ligt op een locatie met hoge archeologische verwachting voor uit alle perioden. Restanten uit oudere perioden (ouder dan middeleeuws) zijn mogelijk verspoeld door beekactiviteit, althans: binnen de grenzen van het beekdal. Direct westel ijk van het plangebied ligt Huis Hengelo (AMK-terrein), van waaruit het dorp Hengelo zich zou hebben ontwikkeld. Noordelijk van het plangebied stond bijbehorende kapel en ligt de Oude Begraafplaats. Zuidelijk van het plangebied zijn op historische topografische kaarten drie bruggen aangegeven waarmee de beek kon worden overgestoken. In het verleden zijn in en rondom het plangebied archeologische vondsten en/of sporen aangetroffen daterend uit de periode vanaf het mesolithicum tot en met de nieuwe tijd. Gezien de middeleeuwse sporen die zowel onder Huis Hengelo als op de Oude Begraafplaats zijn aangetroffen, beslaat het plangebied mogelijk de locatie van een middeleeuws nederzettingsterrein.
Tijdens het verkennend booronderzoek is de verwachte aardkundige situatie bevestigd: aan de noordzijde bevindt zich een dekzandrug; zuidoostelijk daarvan een dynamisch beeksysteem. De ondergrond is tot minimaal 70 cm –mv verstoord. Onder dit niveau zijn lokaal mogelijk diepere verstoringen dan wel archeologisch relevante niveaus aanwezig.
