Een groot deel van de Europese Roma en Sinti leidt een marginaal bestaan. De meesten hebben zo weinig scholing dat ze nauwelijks perspectief hebben op een betere toekomst. Zij hebben slechts in geringe mate geprofiteerd van de verbeterde toegang tot het onderwijs voor mensen uit de lagere sociaaleconomische klassen vanaf 1950. Hoe kan het dat het slechts zo weinig Roma en Sinti gelukt is om door te stromen naar het hoger onderwijs?
Om deze vragen diepgaand te kunnen beantwoorden beperkte dit onderzoek zich tot een vergelijking tussen twee landen met een uiteenlopende naoorlogse geschiedenis, Nederland en Tsjechië. Naast het raadplegen van literatuur, rapporten, krantenartikelen, beeldmateriaal en gesprekken met deskundigen op dit gebied, vormden 51 interviews met Roma en Sinti uit deze twee landen de belangrijkste bronnen. Het ging om biografische vraaggesprekken met een beredeneerde selectie van Nederlandse en Tsjechische Roma en Sinti: mannen en vrouwen, verdeeld over de beide landen woonachtig, in drie leeftijdscategorieën (tussen de twintig en veertig jaar, tussen de veertig en zestig en boven de zestig). De oudere Roma in Tsjechië hadden nog in de communistische tijd op school gezeten, de jongeren in de tijd na de val van dat regime. De oudere Roma en Sinti in Nederland hadden nog met hun ouders rondgetrokken, de jongeren waren gevestigd in huizen of op woonwagenkampen. Ondanks de verschillen in recente geschiedenis en in kansen op goed onderwijs is het opleidingsniveau in beide landen over het algemeen zeer laag gebleven. Een vergelijking tussen Nederland en Tsjechië maakt inzichtelijk welke drempels Roma en Sinti moeten overwinnen om kans te maken op stijging op de sociale ladder.
