Op 15 maart 2013 is het ontgraven van een paddenpoel archeologisch begeleid. De paddenpoel is gelegen aan de rand van de bebouwde kom van ’s-Hertogenbosch, tussen de Wasweg en de rijksweg A2, op circa 200 meter van de tempel van Empel. In de afgelopen eeuw, maar met name ten tijde van de ruilverkaveling is de dekzandkop waarop het heiligdom is gelegen geëgaliseerd, waarbij materiaal dat met het heiligdom in verband wordt gebracht over een groot oppervlak verspreid is geraakt. Bij een archeologisch onderzoek voorafgaand aan de verbreding van de rijksweg A2 door de ACVU-HBS op het aangrenzende terrein is een groot aantal vondsten aangetroffen die aan de tempel kunnen worden toegewezen. Voorafgaand aan de herinrichting van het plangebied is een archeologisch bureau- en booronderzoek uitgevoerd. Hieruit is gebleken dat de dekzandrug waarop de tempel van Empel is gelegen doorloopt tot binnen het plangebied. Hierop is besloten dat de ontgraving van de paddenpoel archeologisch begeleid dient te worden. Tijdens het archeologisch onderzoek zijn verschillende vondsten gedaan, bestaande uit aardewerk en metaal, waarvan een klein deel in verband kan worden gebracht met het Romeinse heiligdom (een munt, een deel van een fibula en drie fragmenten aardewerk). Verder is aardewerk uit de periode 900 – 1400 na Chr. gevonden en zijn metaalvondsten aangetroffen uit de periode 1650 – 1940 (munten, penningen en een musketkogel) en uit de periode 1940-1945 (kogelhulzen en granaatfragmenten). Tijdens het onderzoek is een intacte bodempodzol aangetroffen, maar er zijn geen bodemsporen waargenomen.
