In verband met een geplande wijziging van het bestemmingsplan om toekomstige woningbouw mogelijk te maken is een inventariserend archeologisch veldonderzoek uitgevoerd op twee locaties langs de Heerenveenseweg te Wolvega, gemeente Weststellingwerf, provincie Fryslân. Het doel van het onderzoek is om vast te stellen of in het gebied archeologische waarden aanwezig zijn die door bodemingrepen bedreigd worden.Het onderzoek bestaat uit een bureau- en een veldonderzoek. Bij het bureauonderzoek zijn bronnen geraadpleegd op het gebied van fysische geografie, archeologie en historische geografie. Bij het veldonderzoek zijn elf boringen geplaatst om archeologische indicatoren op te sporen en om de gaafheid van de bodem te bepalen.Uit het bureauonderzoek blijkt dat Wolvega op een glaciale rug ligt. Deze raakte omstreeks de bronstijd bedekt met veenmoeras. Archeologische waarden uit de omgeving bestaan uit bewerkt en verbrand vuursteen dat waarschijnlijk dateert uit de steentijd van voor de veenbedekking. De dorpskern van Wolvega dateert uit de middeleeuwen en is dus van na de veenontginning. Uit het veldonderzoek blijkt dat de kwaliteit van de bodem op de noordelijke locatie matig is. Eventuele archeologische grondsporen zullen daar verloren zijn. De bodem op de zuidelijke locatie is nog wel goed. Daar kunnen archeologische resten goed bewaard gebleven zijn. Echter het veldonderzoek heeft geen archeologische indicatoren opgeleverd zoals bewerkt vuursteen of houtskool. Aanwijzingen voor de aanwezigheid van een vindplaats zijn er daarom niet. Het advies luidt om geen nader archeologisch onderzoek te ondernemen.
