Tijdens het booronderzoek is een begraven ijstijdenlandschap ontdekt met een afwisseling van welvingen en (iets) lager gelegen delen, met in het zuiden een geerodeerd dal geflankeerd door een glaciale zandrug. Uit de resultaten van het booronderzoek bleken de welvingen niet zeer prominent te zijn en de hydromorfe podzolkenmerken zeer zwak ontwikkeld, met uitzondering van een hoger gelegen zandrug (eveneens begraven en niet op het maaiveld te onderscheiden) die de noordzijde van beekdal van de Oude Aa in het zuiden van het plangebied markeert. Deze zandrug is oost-west gericht en heeft een breedte van circa 10-20 m. De westelijke punt van deze zandrug ligt in het plangebied van de voorgenomen aanleg. De zandrug vertoont een sterk ontwikkeld podzolprofiel met een overdreven dikke A- en E-horizont die zijn ontstaan onder invloed van in het verleden fluctuerende waterstanden in combinatie met een goede drainage. Op deze zandrug is een archeologische vindplaats aangetroffen: maar liefst vijf van de acht boringen met het genoemde podzolprofiel leverden bewerkt vuursteen op. Het betreft een archeologische vindplaats uit de steentijd. Vindplaatsen uit de steentijd zijn in de ruime omgeving van het plangebied nog niet bekend, aangezien deze vindplaatsen de regel zijn bedekt met klei en veen en derhalve normaal gesproken niet zomaar worden aangetroffen.
Het beekdal aan de zuidkant van de zandrug betreft de off-site vindplaats: het is vanwege dit beekdal dat men zich hier vestigde en vermoedelijk vanwege de mogelijkheden die dit dal bood voor de jacht of voor het verzamelen van voedsel.
Ten noordzijde van de zandrug zijn geen archeologische resten te verwachten. Het oorspronkelijke veen is veelal ingeklonken of afgegraven (petgaten) en mogelijk ook nog eens verstoord na overstromingen en de afzet van de kleilaag die nu de top van het bodemprofiel bepaalt. Hierdoor vervalt de archeologische verwachting voor bewoningsresten (veenterpen) uit de periode ijzertijd, Romeinse tijd en middeleeuwen. Voor de dijk/kade van het Wolddiep geldt dat de lagen door hun heterogene samenstelling recent lijken te zijn en zijn opgebracht met materiaal uit het diep zelf dat bij een of meerdere verbredingen van het kanaal op de kade is geworpen. Er zijn geen aanwijzingen voor oudere dijklagen, zoals met een plaggenlaag.
