Aanleiding tot het uitvoeren van onderhavig onderzoek vormt de voorgenomen bouw van een appartementencomplex ten oosten van de Noordoostersingel te Harlingen. Omdat de werkzaamheden gepaard zullen gaan met bodemverstorende ingrepen is voorafgaand hieraan een archeologisch onderzoek noodzakelijk. Dit is in overeenstemming met het Verdrag van Malta, dat de bescherming van het cultureel erfgoed op Europees niveau beoogt.In opdracht van CSO-Milfac Adviesbureau voor Milieu, Ruimte en Water te Leeuwarden heeft Archaeological Research & Consultancy (ARC bv) het archeologisch onderzoek uitgevoerd. Voorafgaand aan het veldwerk is op 4 oktober 2006 een voorbereidende bureaustudie verricht door mw. drs. S.A. Mulder. Het inventariserend veldonderzoek (IVO) vond plaats op 18 oktober 2006 door drs. ing. G.J. de Roller. Hierbij zijn tijdens het milieukundig booronderzoek door CSO-Milfac Adviebureau op de onderzoekslocatie de boorkernen eveneens archeologisch geanalyseerd en geïnterpreteerd.
ConclusieDe ondergrond bestaat uit ongestoorde wadafzettingen die rond 1 m onder het maaiveld overgaan in verstoorde bodemlagen. Deze verstoring is een gevolg van de huidige bebouwing van het terrein. In twee boringen (5 en 6) is tussen de wadafzettigen een humeuze laag aangetroffen, die wijst op een oud oppervlak of cultuurlaag. In deze laag zijn in de boringen geen archeologsiche indicatoren aangetroffen. Het is daardoor onduidelijk of deze laag archeologische resten bevat of dat het een natuurlijk oppervlak betreft.
AanbevelingMocht er voor de toekomstige bebouwing een bouwput aangelegd worden die tot 1,70 m onder het maaiveld rijkt, dan is het aan te bevelen tijd in te ruimen om het oude oppervlak of cultuurlaag aan een nader onderzoek te onderwerpen. Dit onderzoek moet dan duidelijk maken of we hier inderdaad met een oud oppervlak of cultuurlaag te maken hebben, wat de datering van deze laag is en of er archeologische indicatoren in aanwezig zijn. Wordt bij de nieuwbouw deze laag niet bereikt dan zijn er vanuit archeologisch oogpunt geen belemmeringen voor de voorgenomen nieuwbouw.
