De ondergrond in de onderzoeksgebieden is ongekarteerd op de bodemkaart en geomorfologische kaart en bestaat vermoedelijk uit vlakvaaggronden. Voor onderzoeksgebied Oud Den Helder mogelijk ook uit beekeerdgronden. Geomorfologisch gezien gaat het waarschijnlijk om een ingesloten strandvlakte of om vervlakte duinen. Op de beleidskaart van gemeente Den Helder ligt het onderzoeksgebied Oud Den Helder binnen de zone DH2-1. Dit gebied omvat de historische kern van Den Helder en Huisduinen. Het gebied heeft een dubbelbestemming, met archeologie als tweede bestemming. Direct ten westen van de historische kern is het fort Erfprins gelegen (DH3-3). Het onderzoeksgebied in de Visbuurt ligt binnen gebied DH3-2. Dit gebied omvat de omwalling van de Nieuwstad, aangelegd door de Fransen. De resten hiervan liggen onder de 19e eeuwse, ondiep gefundeerde, stadsbebouwing.
De eventueel aan te treffen archeologische waarden binnen het plangebied dateren uit de periode paleolithicum-neolithicum (in top pleistoceen dekzand, rivierduinen of oude stroomgeulen), bronstijd (in de zeeafzettingen of het veen), ijzertijd tot middeleeuwen (op terpen in de zeeafzettingen en de hoger gelegen bewoningskernen) en nieuwe tijd (vanaf direct onder het maaiveld). De kans op het aantreffen van resten van vóór de middeleeuwen is waarschijnlijk niet groot, zeker als het gaat om resten in situ.
Gezien de lage kans op het aantreffen van in situ resten uit deze perioden, kunnen in de praktijk uit de perioden tot en met de ijzertijd vooral losse vondsten worden verwacht. Op basis van bovenstaande onderzoeksresultaten bevelen wij vervolgonderzoek in de vorm van een archeologische begeleiding aan.
