In opdracht van DGMR heeft ADC ArcheoProjecten een bureauonderzoek en een inventariserend veldonderzoek uitgevoerd voor de eerste en tweede fase van het dorpsvernieuwingsplan in Ter Heijde (gemeente Westland). In het plangebied zal de bestaande bebouwing worden gesloopt en zal nieuwbouw worden gerealiseerd. Het onderzoek is uitgevoerd in het kader van een projectprocedure ten behoeve van een wijziging in het bestemmingsplan en was noodzakelijk om te bepalen of bij de voorgenomen activiteiten de kans bestaat dat archeologische resten in de ondergrond worden aangetast.
Op basis van het bureauonderzoek werden archeologische resten op of in de top van de Oude Duinen verwacht vanaf de IJzertijd tot en met de Late Middeleeuwen. Ook werden 18e eeuwse arbeidershuisjes langs de noordelijke strook evenwijdig aan K. Doormanweg / Heijdseweg verwacht.
Teneinde deze verwachting te toetsen werd in het plangebied een booronderzoek (specificatie VS03) uitgevoerd. Er zijn geen aanwijzingen gevonden voor behoudenswaardige archeologische waarden in de ondergrond. Tijdens het booronderzoek is alleen Jong Duinzand aangeboord tot een diepte van ca. 4 m ? mv, direct onder een omgewerkte en/of opgebrachte laag duinzand. In een aantal boringen is een oude omgewerkte bodem uit de Nieuwe Tijd aangetroffen met het voorkomen van recente baksteenfragmenten. In het duinzand zijn een aantal dunnen vegetatiehorizonten aangetroffen. In één boring is op 260 cm -mv een duidelijk donkere en stevige horizont waargenomen die mogelijk een oud loopoppervlak is uit de Late Middeleeuwen.
ADC ArcheoProjecten adviseert om beide deelgebieden vrij te geven voor de voorgenomen ontwikkeling mits in deelgebied 1 de grondroerende activiteiten niet dieper plaatsvinden dan 210 cm -mv. Het is echter niet volledig uit te sluiten dat binnen het onderzochte gebied toch nog archeologische resten voorkomen. Het verdient daarom aanbeveling om de uitvoerder van het grondwerk te wijzen op de plicht archeologische vondsten te melden bij het bevoegde overheid, zoals aangegeven in artikel 53 van de Monumentenwet
