In het centrum van Stedum is het riool vernieuwd en zijn de wegen heringericht. Dewerkzaamheden zijn in twee fasen uitgevoerd. De Hoofdstraat behoorde tot fase 1 en deMolenstraat en Lellensterweg tot fase 2. Vanwege de hoge archeologische waarde van dedorpskern van Stedum is door de gemeente Loppersum besloten om de graafwerkzaamhedenarcheologisch te laten begeleiden. Deze begeleiding is in 2014 en 2015 door RAAP uitgevoerd.Tijdens de archeologische begeleiding zijn verschillende archeologische sporen aangetroffenwaaronder ophogingslagen, brandlagen en een plaggenstructuur (waarschijnlijk een huiswierde).Het wierdepakket was 0,4 tot 2,0 m dik. Verder zijn sloten, kuilen, paalsporen, waterputten, houtenconstructies en muurwerk waargenomen. Nabij de kerk zijn menselijke begravingen aanwezig. Hetvondstmateriaal betreft zowel anorganisch (aardewerk, natuursteen, glas en metaal) als organisch(leer, bot en hout) materiaal. De sporen en vondsten dateren uit de Vroege Middeleeuwen tot enmet de Nieuwe tijd en zijn goed geconserveerd. Ook macroresten zijn goed bewaard gebleven.Het onderzoek heeft waardevolle informatie over de ontwikkeling van Stedum opgeleverd.Sporen en vondsten uit de IJzertijd-Romeinse tijd zijn niet aangetroffen, maar mogelijk zijn dezeelders nog wel aanwezig. De bevindingen geven de indruk dat Stedum zich vanaf de VroegeMiddeleeuwen heeft ontwikkeld vanuit twee afzonderlijke terpen. Aan de westzijde bevond zich deterp onder de Bartholomeuskerk, waarvan aan de westzijde van de Hoofdstraat mogelijk een deelvan de grenssloot uit de Vroege Middeleeuwen is waargenomen. Aan de oostzijde van Stedumis een plaggenstructuur aangetroffen die vermoedelijk behoort bij een huiswierde. Verwachtwordt dat deze huiswierde uit de Vroege Middeleeuwen dateert, maar daterend vondstmateriaalontbreekt. In het relatief laaggelegen gedeelte tussen de kerkterp en de huiswierde bevond zicheen sloot uit de 13e-14e eeuw. Waarschijnlijk gaat het om het vervolg van de Stedumermaar, datvermoedelijk oorspronkelijk in verbinding heeft gestaan met de gracht om het terrein van de borgNittersum ten noorden van Stedum.Ten zuidoosten van de kerk zijn in het tracé menselijke begravingen uit de Late Middeleeuwenaangetroffen die behoren bij het kerkhof van de Bartholomeuskerk. De Hoofdstraat zal hier op eenlater moment zijn verbreed.Een opmerkelijk fenomeen zijn de brandlaagjes die tijdens het onderzoek zijn waargenomen.Gedacht werd dat deze mogelijk verband hielden met een historisch bekende stadsbrand uit de16e eeuw. Het onderzoek heeft echter aangetoond dat het gaat om meerdere brandlagen, die uitde (Vroege) Middeleeuwen dateren en geen relatie hebben met de historische stadsbrand.
