Abstract

Birds commonly adjust timing of breeding to spring temperatures. We examine 40 years of data from the Owyhee Mountains of southern Idaho to determine whether mean lay date of Mountain Bluebirds (Sialia currucoides) is associated with May temperatures and whether an increase in those temperatures has advanced the breeding phenology of this species. Average May temperatures increased by 2.20°C (CI = 0.58, 3.82) from 1980 to 2019, were negatively correlated with the mean lay date of Mountain Bluebirds, and thus were associated with an advancement in breeding phenology of 2.09 (CI = 1.16, 3.03) days per decade. Our study demonstrates the importance of long-term monitoring to detect effects of climate change on bird phenology.

Las aves usualmente ajustan su época de reproducción a las temperaturas de primavera. Examinamos 40 años de datos de Owyhee Mountains del sudeste de Idaho para determinar si la fecha promedio de puesta del azulejo Sialia currucoides se asocia con las temperaturas de mayo y si el incremento de dichas temperaturas ha adelantado la fenología reproductiva de esta especie. Las temperaturas de mayo aumentaron 2.20°C (IC = 0.58, 3.82) de 1980 al 2019, donde hubo una correlación negativa con la fecha promedio de puesta del azulejo Sialia currucoides, por lo que se asoció con que se adelantó la fenología reproductiva de 2.09 (IC = 1.16, 3.03) días por década. Nuestro estudio demuestra la importancia del monitoreo a largo plazo para determinar los efectos del cambio climático en la fenología de las aves.
