Recent advances in phase-sensitive amplifiers (PSAs) using periodically poled LiNbO₃ are reviewed. Their principles of operation and distinct features are described. Applications in optical communication are studied in terms of the inline operation and amplification of a sophisticated modulation format. Challenges for the future are also discussed.
