An Implementation Analysis of a Staffing Protocol for Hospital Chaplaincy

Abstract

A large metropolitan hospital in the southeastern United States implemented the Grant Riverside Staffing Process (GRASP) in its pastoral care department. This staffing recommendation model provides a practical approach to inpatient unit assessment and may assist in providing chaplains with evidence to demonstrate staffing needs. However, more research must be done to understand how methodological approaches might curtail its limitations and provide a model for generalized use in different contexts.

  • Martin Shaw, AdventHealth University

    Martin Shaw is a Research Associate and Adjunct Professor at AdventHealth University (AHU). His research interests include spirituality, mental health and resiliency. He is passionate about data analytics, statistics and the intersection of quantitative and qualitative research. He previously served as a hospital chaplain at AdventHealth East Orlando and an academic coach at AHU. He is a board-certified chaplain through the Association of Professional Chaplains. He is certified in public health by the National Board of Public Health Examiners. He holds professional certifications in data analytics and project management from Google. He holds a Bachelor of Pastoral Care from Southern Adventist University, a Master of Divinity from Andrews University and a Master of Public Health from the University of Florida. He is pursuing a PhD in Applied Health Research and Evaluation at Clemson University.

  • Christian Taylor, AdventHealth Corporate

    Christian Taylor is a Director of Mission and Ministry at AdventHealth Corporate with support for Facility Administration. At the time of writing, he was the Pastoral Care Manager at AdventHealth Orlando in Orlando, Florida. He specializes in oncology spiritual care and is an active member of the AdventHealth Orlando Bioethics Committee. He holds a Bachelor of Theology from Oakwood University, a Master of Divinity from Andrews University and, at the time of writing, is completing the MHA/MBA Dual Degree programme at AdventHealth University and Stetson University.
