The crystal structure of a thorium aluminum alloy, Th2Al7

Abstract

Th2Al7 is an orthorhombic crystal, space group Pbam, with the following lattice parameters: a = 11.479 Å, b = 5.874 Å and c = 5.53 Å. Volume = 373.9 Å3. The measured density of 5.40 g/cm3 indicates a cell content of 2(Th2Al)7, which gives a calculated density of 5.80 g/cm3.

The atom parameters were determined from Patterson and electron-density projections, and refined by least squares using isotropic temperature corrections and correcting for anomalous dispersion. The four thorium atoms are on the 4(g), xy0, with x = 0.147 and y =.142, 8 Al atoms are on the general position 8i, xyz, with x = 0.410, y = 0.153, z = 0.238, 4 Al atoms are on 4h, xy½, with x = 0.248, y = 0.406, 2 Al atoms are on 2b; 00½.
