A New Antibiotic Chloro-Sesquiterpene from the Caribbean Sponge Smenospongia aurea

Abstract

A new sesquiterpene phenol, containing the rather uncommon chlorine atom, was isolated from a sample of Smenospongia aurea collected along Bahama’s Islands. Its structure has been elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and confirmed via synthesis. This com pound exhibited antibacterial activity.
