Summary
Against the background of the post-communist transformation in Eastern Europe, this essay discusses biographical alienation as a reference to a specific social pathology in times of radical social change. After highlighting certain aspects of the post-communist condition, the essay introduces a single case from a study on young people in transition to working life in post-Soviet Lithuania. This case then serves as the empirical base for an outline of the notion of biographical alienation, a phenomenon that essentially consists of a problematic appropriation and assimilation of the social and material world within the temporal dimension of individual biographies. A disruption of living conditions undermines the conversion of the society’s and one’s own past into a constructive future project. The notion of biographical alienation is suggested as a heuristic concept for the study of the consequences of social rupture from a sociological perspective. This is followed by a discussion of the embeddedness of the development of the concept within the underlying study of biographical uncertainty and is illustrated with selected examples from other interviews. The final section discusses the usefulness of the notion of biographical alienation for the investigation of social pathologies and indicates starting points for developing it further in conceptual terms.
Zusammenfassung
Vor dem Hintergrund der postkommunistischen Transformation in Osteuropa diskutiert dieser Essay biografische Entfremdung als ein einen Hinweis auf eine spezifische soziale Pathologie in Zeiten radikalen sozialen Wandels. Nach einer Beschreibung der postkommunistischen Situation anhand ausgewählter Aspekte, stellt der Aufsatz einen Einzelfall vor, der im Rahmen einer Untersuchung Jugendlicher im Übergang in die Arbeitswelt im ehemals sowjetischen Litauen interviewt wurde und der als empirische Grundlage für den Entwurf eines Begriffs biografischer Entfremdung dient. Biografische Entfremdung verweist im Wesentlichen auf eine problematische Aneignung des sozialen und materiellen Umfelds in der Zeitdimension der Biografie: Der Zusammenbruch gewohnter Lebensumstände unterminiert die Umwandlung der gesellschaftlichen und der eigenen Vergangenheit in einen konstruktiven Zukunftsentwurf. Der Begriff der biografischen Entfremdung erweist sich hierbei als ein geeignetes heuristisches Konzept zur soziologischen Untersuchung gesellschaftlicher Umbrüche. Die empirische Fundierung des Konzepts im Rahmen der Untersuchung biografischer Unsicherheit wird anhand einiger ausgewählter Beispiele aus weiteren Interviews illustriert. Abschließend werden die Brauchbarkeit des Begriffs für die Untersuchung sozialer Pathologien und mögliche Ausgangspunkte einer konzeptuellen Spezifizierung erörtert.
