Abstract

Like in other Expressionist movies around the First World War, writing plays a decisive role in Paul Wegener’s silent movie The Golem: How He Came Into The World (1920). The article analyses the complex function of books, inserts and other written documents in the film, points out their medial aspects and exposes in this context also presence effects and moments of self-referentiality.
