“Cultura e accoglienza”: The inclusion of asylum seeker students in university language courses. Initial experience and data

    Elena Maria Duso was awarded a degree in Italian Literature in 1995, a PhD in Romance Philology in 1999, and a Masters in “Teaching Italian as a Second Language” in 2001. She has been working at the Language Centre in Padua since 2001, and she collaborates with the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies of the same University. She has written papers and books about Italian Literature and about Italian L2 Acquisition, Teaching L2 grammar and Writing in a Second Language.

    Luisa Marigo received her MA degree in Language and English Literature from the University of Padua, the Specializing Bachelor in “Studi Interculturali” from the University of Padua and in “Insegnamento della lingua e cultura italiana a stranieri” from the University of Venezia. She teaches Italian as a Foreign Language (IFL) at the University Language Centre of the University of Padua. She also has experience in designing and developing projects for the inclusion of foreign students and families in the local territory collaborating with the Municipality of Padua (educational sector).

Abstract

In 2016 the University of Padova and its Language Centre (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo – CLA) became involved in the two-year “Cultura e accoglienza” Project (see Dalziel and Piazzoli in this volume), the aim of which was to encourage around 30 refugees and asylum seekers to pursue university studies by means of a personalized training programme with support from language teachers and tutors. This report first describes some of the main national projects regarding the inclusion of refugee/asylum seekers in Italy and then describes the “Cultura e accoglienza” project, highlighting some of the opportunities and challenges it presented. For the Language Centre this was the very first experience of this kind.
