Abstract
The clinical laboratory plays an essential role in both the diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of diabetes mellitus. Here, a short review of the main laboratory parameters used in the monitoring of diabetes–glucose (including point-of-care testing), HbA1c and microalbuminuria–is presented. The impact of pre-analytical and analytical performance criteria on the clinical decision making process is discussed.
