Abstract
Interdisciplinary competencies are considered skills that are key in graduates’ professional lives as well as for lifelong learning, and they are also seen as an important element of future research. Chaos & Order is a project that began with a funded artistic research project (FWF PEEK GRANT D.A.S. AR 366) and identifies possible scenarios for both interdisciplinary research and interdisciplinarity in the new Austrian school curriculum. It is based on an art course that was followed by numerous workshops in public spaces, at conferences, and in nursing homes. It reached people between the ages of three and 102 (n=487) and had the aim of getting subjects to narrate and draw the topic of dementia by addressing personally experienced forms of confusion and order. This article shows how the results of an artistic research project can also be analyzed mathematically and psychologically. This example can be further developed and used for a Finnish-style phenomenon-based school project (where several subjects work together on one topic). In addition to raising awareness of the disease itself, our goal is to broaden our own horizons of meaning and the ability to build bridges between art and other disciplines. Learning is enhanced when students make meaningful connections between new knowledge they have gained and their own experiences. Combining psychology or math instruction with the study of art helps to reinforce learning within each discipline, developing conceptual frameworks that lead to broader understandings. Future interdisciplinary teaching formats could be co-developed to reveal connections between subject areas (e.g., art, mathematics, and psychology) and their content.

Interdisziplinäre Kompetenzen gelten als Schlüsselqualifikationen im Berufsleben und für lebenslanges Lernen sowie als wichtiges Element zukünftiger Forschung. Das Projekt Chaos & Order geht aus einem geförderten künstlerischen Forschungsvorhaben (FWF PEEK GRANT D.A.S. AR 366) hervor und weist Wege zur Interdisziplinarität in der Forschung wie auch im neuen österreichischen Schullehrplan. Es basiert auf einem Kunstkurs in Schulen, Workshops und Pflegeheimen und richtete sich an Menschen im Alter von drei bis 102 Jahren (n=487) mit dem Ziel, das Thema Demenz aufgrund persönlich erlebter Formen von Verwirrung und Ordnung erzählerisch und zeichnerisch darzustellen. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Ergebnisse eines künstlerischen Forschungsprojekts sich auch mathematisch und psychologisch auswerten lassen. Unser Ziel ist es nicht nur, das Bewusstsein für die Krankheit selbst zu schärfen, sondern auch unseren eigenen Bedeutungshorizont und die Fähigkeit zum Brückenschlag zwischen der Kunst und anderen Fächern zu erweitern. Das Lernen verbessert sich, wenn sinnvolle Verbindungen zwischen neu erworbenem Wissen und eigenen Erfahrungen hergestellt werden. Die Kombination von Psychologie oder Mathematik und dem Kunstunterricht trägt dazu bei, das Lernen in jedem Fach zu verstärken und konzeptionell ein breiteres Verständnis zu entwickeln. In Zukunft könnten interdisziplinäre Unterrichtsformate zwischen Einzelfächern (z. B. Kunst, Mathematik und Psychologie) gemeinschaftlich entwickelt werden.
