Wintering ecology of soricine shrews, which are active in winter in cold regions, was reviewed. Shrews mainly feed on small invertebrates on and in soil. Food resource for shrews seems to be reduced in winter but stable food supply may be maintained during winter. Sizes of body and skull tend to become smaller in winter of the birth year and then rapidly become larger toward summer in soricine shrews. It is called Dehnelʼs phenomenon and seems to be related to their wintering ecology, but the mechanism to explain it has not been clarified.
