Abstract

This paper overviews the Japanese Mailing List of Historical Geography (MLHG) as an example of the internet communications in the geography community, and makes an analysis of its posts. MLHG was generated in January of 2002 by several young historical geographers. The number of subscribers, or e-mail addresses, was 153 as of April of 2014. The posts amount to about 6300 in number from its start to March of 2014. The results obtained by the analysis of extracted 694 e-mails are as follows:

Information about museum exhibitions is most posted, and accounts for more than 30 percent. Other common content includes posts on new books, upcoming meetings, and the latest issues of the journals. Compared with the mailing list "chiri," which is run by the Association of Japanese Geographers and covers Japanese geography in general, many of the posts in "chiri" are official  or semi-official announcement of the events like an academic conference from persons concerned. In the meanwhile, most e-mails in MLHG are voluntary provision of information and are based on research interests of the posters. Characteristically, MLHG owes a lot of posts to only one specific member, and has a tendency to reflect his interest.

When we regard internet communications including MLHG as the future study subject  of history of geography, the task to be solved is how to archive web data.
