We have established an analytical method for determination of HFSE using ICP-MS after mixed acid digestion and alkali-fusion decomposition. Analytical accuracy and precision were better than ±10% and 3% (1sd), respectively. Using our methods, HFSE were determined for more than 70 basaltic rocks collected from NE Japan, SW Japan, Jeju Island, and Haleakala volcano, Hawaii. Tentative results show that the Nb/Ta ratios in basaltic rocks from Jeju Island and Hawaii are constant and slightly subchondritic. However, basaltic rocks from NE Japan are variable in Nb/Ta ratio and some even show superchondritic Nb/Ta. Overall, Zr/Hf ratio increases with increasing Zr concentration, indicating that Zr/Hf ratio is probably affected by melting process.
