XJB-5-131-mediated improvement in physiology and behaviour of the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease is age- and sex- dependent

Fig 1

The structure of XJB-5-131.

XJB-5-131 is a bi-functional antioxidant comprising a delivery component conjugated to an antioxidant moiety [1, 4]. The delivery portion of the molecule is an alkene peptide isostere modification of the Leu-D-Phe-Pro-Val-Orn segment of the antibiotic gramicidin S (red) [15]. This peptide mimetic directly targets the mitochondrial membrane and delivers the antioxidant nitroxide, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) (blue), to neutralize reactive radical species.
