A combined experimental and theoretical study on hydroxypyrene super-photoacids
- This work presents a combined experimental-theoretical approach to investigate the excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) for a series of hydroxypyrene super-photoacids in acetoneous solution. Experimentally, the ESPT kinetics are studied by combining steady-state and time-resolved visible spectroscopic techniques. The theoretical part then focuses on the thermodynamics of the ESPT as quantified by the \(\it {pK_{a}}\)\(^{*}\) value, i.e., the excited-state \(\it {pK_{a}}\) value of these compounds. Obtained via the Förster cycle, the \(\it {pK_{a}}\)\(^{*}\) values presented here are calculated through ground-state \(\it {pK_{a}}\) values based on COSMO-RS and UV/Vis absorption as well as fluorescence emission energies based on ADC(2) and CC2 in combination with the implicit solvent model COSMO. Finally, the need to go beyond implicit solvation and account for explicit solvent effects was studied by comparing the solvents acetone, DMSO, and water.
